Automator: How to copy, separate RAW files and generate a High and Low resolution folder of your files (that can then be viewed remotely.)

ARTICLE: In Tight in Torino

By Joe Cellini

There are no medals awarded for photojournalism at the Winter Olympics. But anyone watching photojournalist Vincent Laforet run with 50 pounds of equipment from the Oval Lingotto — where he’d just photographed 5000-meter speedskater Chad Hedrick winning America’s first gold medal of the 2006 Games — toward Palavela, the pairs figure skating venue, a chilly mile away, might easily believe that he was witnessing an unannounced leg of a new Olympic test sport... How To Get the Script to Work for You:

Download the following Script from Third Party Site: Download the following SCRIPT from completeddigitalphotography.com named "Separate JPEGs" Double click on the action or go to Automator and import the action.

Launch Image Capture Go to "Preferences" and make sure that in CAMERA - When camera is connected, open: "Image Capture" is selected.

Then Insert a disk and a window should pop up automatically. On the bottom left click on "Options..." check the box "Automatically download all items."

Download the following Script from Third Party Site: Download the following SCRIPT from Yarra Valley Software named "iMagine Photo. " Drag the iMagine Photo Application to your Applications folder. The actions will automatically be included into your automator actions the next time you re-launch Automator.

Specify Source, Destination and Script In the same pop up window with your disk that just popped up:

Download to: the folder on your desktop named "From Card" and select it.

Automatic Taks: Select the "Vincent _Script_v4" you downloaded in step 3.

The script is now ready. Make sure that Image Capture is RUNNING before you try the automated process out.

Download the Script developed by Apple Download the following SCRIPT and double-click on it to launch it in Automator.

You'll need to go through it and specify a few destinations:

First Create a folder on your desktop named "From Card"

Second go through the script and click on the arrow by step 1 and delete the current "From Card" icon with the "-" key on the bottom left of that small window and then click on the "+" key to link the action to the "From Card" folder you just created.

Specify that same "From Card" folder in stepos 4 & 14

In steps 5 & 9 go and specify your "Public" folder that is embedded within your "Users" folder at the root level of your hard drive within your current user folder (i.e.: Hard Drive / Users / YourUsername / Public/ .) This is the destination where your JPEG files will be saved to (and where they can be remotely browsed.)

In Step 15 create a folder named "RAW" within the "From Card" folder on your desktop - and specify that folder within the action using the "+" button (and removing the old link with the "-" button.) This is where your RAW files will be moved to at the end of the script.

Save The Script first as a workflow - and then as an Application on your desktop or wherever you'd like it to reside.

(Big Thanks goes here to A. Green, J. Schorr, and B. Foroughi for all of the time put into this.)

Once You Insert the Next Disk (with Image Capture already running) it should automatically start to download the files into the "From Card" folder you specified on your desktop. Once images land there - the script should automatically launch and begin to separate out the RAW files (leaving them untouched) and then create two folders in your USERS / public folder - one with a high resolutions files and one with very low resolution files. Depending on your connection speed - your editor can browse either the low or high res folders.

Please remember to EJECT your disk before you insert the next one. At this time there is no support for multiple card readers - we are working on that and will let you know when an update is available.

Should you have any questions, please contact Barham Foroughi from Apple at bahram@apple.com

HOW TO HAVE YOUR EDITOR BROWSE YOUR DISK REMOTELY:

1. if you're on the same network (i.e. in the same office, stadium, or on the same airport connection), simply have them connect to your computer's via file sharing - they can browse your public folder instantly.

2. if you're on an external network you will need to obtain either a public IP address, or a static IP address. You will need to request this in advance from your ISP provider. This can be done when you put an order in to have your internet connection installed at a stadium for example, and many of the ISPs you use as home also offer this service. You need to make sure that you have an IP address which is public and can be routed to from the outside world- private IP addresses will not work. Routers or cable modems can block this address and act as a firewall - make sure you disable any firewalls that will prevent the outside world from connecting to your computer.
